Purpose of Role:

To provide a school nursing service and work closely with the pastoral team to promote the physical and mental health of all students by providing effective and high quality early intervention alongside a preventative programme of advice and support. The school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and thereby supports their achievement, providing an immediate safety net for chronically ill students in addition to promoting a healthy school environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the best possible medical care is available to pupils and staff on an immediate/emergency care basis
  • Treating pupils and staff with the aim of encouraging pupils to return to their timetable as soon as appropriate
  • Arranging to get the patient home safely or to alternative care, e.g. GP or hospital
  • Ensuring the Medical Room is supervised, clean, tidy, well stocked and supplies safely stored
  • Administering medication according to School policy
  • Providing staff with first aid training
  • Performing necessary health checks to assist with diagnosis
  • Management of first aid kits around the school and replacement of supplies
  • Timely maintenance of pupil files, medical records and medical centre attendance record
  • Liaising with local health authorities in the organisation of immunisation programmes
  • Working closely with the Designated Safeguarding Leads, Chaplain and School Counsellor

 

Qualifications/Training/Skills

  • RSCN, RN–child, or RGN
  • Experience in either school nursing; A&E experience; paediatric/adolescent health nursing (desirable)
  • Minimum 3yrs post registration
  • Good working knowledge of Safeguarding issues (further training will be provided)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Willing to make a full contribution to the life of the School
  • Excellent communication, listening, organisational and computer skills
  • Ability to win the trust of children and encourage them to talk about their problems
  • Ability to explore sensitive issues with tact, understanding and patience
  • Ability to stay calm in an emergency
  • Strong empathy with the School’s ethos and values
